Garmin GNS430

This page is to help familiarise you with the Garmin 430 which is fitted in G-BOTF.
Do Not use for operational purposes.
Please see the manual in the Pilots Operating Handbook to confirm any details.

Hold the mouse over a control on the picture to get a description of it's function.

Some of the descriptions are quite large, so if you are unable to read all that is in the box before it closes, move the mouse away then return it.

 

The power / COM volume knob controls unit power and communications radio volume. Press momentarily to disable automatic squelch control. The VLOC volume knob controls audio volume for the selected VOR/Localizer frequency.  Press momentarily to enable/disable the identifier tone. The COM flip-flop key is used to swap the active and standby COM frequencies. 

Press and hold to select the emergency channel, 121.500 MHz. The VLOC flip-flop key is used to swap the active and standby VLOC frequencies. The large left knob is used to tune the megahertz (MHz) value of the standby frequency for the COM transceiver or the VLOC receiver, whichever is currently selected by the tuning cursor.

The small left knob is used to tune the kilohertz (KHz) value of the standby frequency for the COM transceiver or the VLOC receiver, whichever is currently selected by the tuning cursor.  

Press this knob momentarily to toggle the tuning cursor between the COM and VLOC frequency fields. The CDI key is used to toggle between GPS or VLOC modes, switching the navigation source to the external HSI or CDI.

The CDI key is used to toggle between GPS or VLOC modes, switching the navigation source to the external HSI or CDI. The OBS key is used to select manual or automatic waypoint sequencing. 

 Press the OBS key to select OBS mode, which prevents sequencing to the next waypoint and selects the desired course from the external OBS selector on the HSI or CDI. 

 Press the OBS key again to return to normal operation with automatic sequencing of waypoints.  The OBS key also has special uses while flying a holding pattern or when activating the missed approach procedure. COM Screen Section

To change the standby communication frequency:

1. Press the small left knob, if needed, to move the tuning cursor to the COM window.

2. Rotate the large left knob to select the MHz, and the small left knob to select the kHz of the desired frequency.

To place the standby communication frequency in the active field, press the COM flip-flop key.

Once you have entered the active frequency, simply repeat steps 1 and 2, above, to enter the standby frequency. 

After both communication frequencies have been entered, you may elect to keep the COM window hot by leaving the cursor on the standby frequency, or move the cursor to the VLOC window by pressing the small left knob. 

NOTE: When selecting VLOC frequencies, the tuning cursor will automatically return to the COM window after 30 seconds of inactivity. VLOC Screen Section

To change the standby VLOC frequency:

1. Press the small left knob, if needed, to activate the tuning cursor in the VLOC window.

2. Rotate the large left knob to select the MHz, and the small left knob to select the kHz of the desired frequency.

After the GNS 430 acquires satellites and computes a position, the map page will appear automatically.
The map page displays your present position using an airplane symbol, the nearby airports, VORs, NDBs, intersections, user waypoints and airspace boundaries, and your flight plan legs displayed as solid lines. Data fields for destination waypoint (WPT), distance to waypoint (DIS), desired track (DTK) and ground speed (GS) appear on the right hand side of the display. 

These fields are user selectable to allow you to configure the unit to your own preferences. Other available settings include altitude, bearing, enroute safe altitude, estimated time of arrival, minimum safe altitude, and ground track.

The map page is one of six pages available under the NAV group:
• Default NAV page		• Map page	
• NAVCOM page			• Position page
• Satellite status page		• Vertical navigation page

To select the desired NAV page, rotate the small right knob until the desired page is displayed. If you are currently viewing a page that is not part of the NAV group, you can quickly return to the NAV group by pressing and holding the CLR key.

In addition to the NAV group of pages, additional groups of pages are available for waypoint information (WPT), auxiliary (AUX) functions such as flight planning or unit settings, and listings for nearest (NRST) airports or other facilities.

To select the desired page group, rotate the large right knob until a page from the desired group is displayed.

To select the desired page within the group, rotate the small right knob until the desired page is displayed. The message key is used to view system messages and to alert you to important warnings and requirements. The flight plan key allows you to create, edit, activate, and invert flight plans, as well as access approaches, departures and arrivals.  

A closest point to flight plan feature is also available from the flight plan menu. The procedures key allows you to select and activate approaches, departures, and arrivals for your flight plan.

The system will automatically use your active flight plan to choose a default procedure, but you may manually enter a different airport. The range key allows you to select the desired map scale.  

Use the up arrow  to zoom out to a larger area or the down arrow to zoom in to a smaller area. The direct-to key allows you to enter a destination waypoint and establishes a direct course to that waypoint. The menu key displays a context-sensitive list of options.  This list allows you to access additional features or change settings that relate to the currently displayed page. The clear key is used to erase information or cancel an entry.

Press and hold this key to immediately display the Default Navigation Page, regardless of which page is currently displayed. The enter key is used to approve an operation or complete data entry.

It is also used to confirm information during power on. The large right knob is used to select between the various page groups: NAV, WPT, AUX, or NRST.  

When the on-screen cursor is enabled, the large right knob allows you to move the cursor among data fields within the page.

The small right knob is used to select among the various pages within one of the groups listed above.  Press this knob momentarily to display the on-screen cursor, which allows you to enter data and/or select from a list of options. The Course Select knob on the HSI allows you to set the selected course angle, as you would choose the CDI or HSI course in an airplane with an autopilot.

To change this course value, simply select the knob with the mouse and drag left to rotate the yellow colored course pointer counter-clockwise or right to rotate clockwise.

Note that this knob does not affect navigation in the simulator unless OBS mode is active, but it will affect certain unit messages while flying. The Heading Select knob on the HSI allows you to choose the desired heading angle as you would choose the desired heading in an airplane with an autopilot.

To change this course value, simply select the knob with the mouse and drag left to rotate the amber colored heading pointer counter-clockwise or right to rotate clockwise.  Omni-Bearing Indicator (OBI)
The HSI contains a green pointer which always displays your bearing to the active waypoint, with reference to the plane’s heading.  This OBI, or RMI, pointer can tell you at a glance if the active waypoint lies left, right, ahead, or behind the plane with respect to the front of the plane.

Deviation Indicator, or D-bar
The HSI will indicate your cross-track deviation by moving the yellow D-bar needle left or right of the centerline.  When the needle is left of the center, relative to the course pointer, you need to fly left to get back on course.  When the needle is right of the center, you need to fly right to get back on course.  The CDI scale will be 5 nautical miles (nm) full-scale deviation for enroute mode, 1 nm for terminal mode, and 0.3 nm for approach mode.

The HSI also contains a TO/FROM indicator in the shape of a white triangle.  When the triangle points toward the course pointer, the waypoint lies ahead of the aircraft with respect to the desired course.  If the triangle points away from the course pointer, the waypoint is behind the aircraft.

Vertical Deviation Indicator
The vertical deviation indicator, or glide slope indicator, is intended to show the vertical profile error when VNAV is active or when flying an ILS approach.  Since the current 400 Series units do not drive this indicator with VNAV data, and since ILS mode is not fully simulated, this feature is not yet available.
