Practical
Before take off you need to listen to ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service )
for flight information.
At Southend this is on frequency 136.050
(Wun tree six dayseemal zero fife zero)
THe ATIS broadcast is changed every hour and each broadcast has a letter designated, so that the controllers know that you have the correct departure information.
You will get the following information.
Information – this is a letter ( Alpha, Bravo, etc)
Runway in Use
Surface wind direction & speed
Visibility
Cloud information
Air temperature and Dew point
QNH (Altitude)
QFE (Height)
Departing aircraft contact tower on 127.725 on first contact report altimeter setting & info received

The first call you are likely to make will go something like:-

CAP413 - Chapter 2 - 1.8.2
After satisfactory communication has been established and provided that no confusion is likely to occur, the ground station may abbreviate callsigns. A pilot may only abbreviate the callsign of his aircraft if it has first been abbreviated by the aeronautical station.

After taxying to A1 and completing your power and pre take off checks

CAP 413 states that you should maintain an even rate of speech not exceeding 100 words per minute.
So the call below should take around 15 Seconds - have a practice.
